This process puts cognitive overload on the inspector, especially during complex inspections, which can lead to errors and incorrect evaluation. Furthermore, 3D visualizations provide massive information in a condensed visual format contextualized to a specific location on an asset, using which inspectors can accurately and more rapidly analyze and assess an asset’s health. The authors suggest integrating 3D visualization of assets to be inspected into NDE workflow software, along with indication/defect information tagged in 3D on the digital asset. In this presentation, the authors will explain the concepts of integrating immersive 3D visualization with NDE inspection workflow software and outline the long-term expected benefits to customers. </div>

Although 3D visualizations are currently used in complex scenarios, such as defense and aerospace, they have yet to become mainstream in NDE processes. Firms like Extende and EPRI are developing inspection simulators using Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Extended Reality (XR) technologies for training inspectors in NDE techniques.</p><p><br></p><p>Digital visualization presents numerous opportunities for NDE, including AR and VR for inspector training, which address key challenges such as the lack of hands-on practice and fear of failure. Telepresence enables experts to assist field inspectors remotely during complicated procedures, while visualization of NDE data in a browser allows for improved accessibility and integration with digital twin systems. Additionally, XR-based simulators can mimic inspection equipment and data capture processes, training inspectors in real-life situations they might encounter in the field.</p><p><br></p><p>Visualizations are an emerging field with a significant potential impact on the future of NDE. As technology advances, more complex and dimensional visualizations may become possible, enabling better understanding of defects and their propagation over time.
