Immersive 3D Visualizations and Digital Twins of Assets and Defects within NDE Inspection Workflow

Textual descriptions of assets and associated defects require an NDE inspector to read and comprehend the written content and then create a visual picture of the result as part of understanding and analysis. This process puts cognitive overload on the inspector, especially during complex inspections, which can lead to errors and incorrect evaluation. Furthermore, 3D visualizations provide massive information in a condensed visual format contextualized to a specific location on an asset, using which inspectors can accurately and more rapidly analyze and assess an asset’s health. The authors suggest integrating 3D visualization of assets to be inspected into NDE workflow software, along with indication/defect information tagged in 3D on the digital asset. In this presentation, the authors will explain the concepts of integrating immersive 3D visualization with NDE inspection workflow software and outline the long-term expected benefits to customers.
